| For a stadium that was built in the early 1970's,
Kaufmann Stadium has really held up to the test of time quite well. There
is never talk of needing a new park in Kansas City despite the lack of luxury
boxes and the small market the Royals play in. This is quite refreshing.
While there is nothing remarkable about Kaufmann Stadium, it is still a fine
place to take in a game. It is situated in a parking lot next to Arrowhead
Stadium and at the intersection of two major interstates. The park has a
very plain exterior, but the inside more than makes up for this. Behind the
right field fence is a large waterfall and in center field a giant crown
shaped scoreboard. The concourse area on the main level is in view of the
playing field - the way current ballparks are built, but not ones built 30
years ago. The concourse features an excellent selection of food and souvenirs,
most of which are reasonably priced. I'm glad my first visit here was after
the natural grass was installed. Having artificial turf here must have given
the park a completely different feel. One of my favorite major league parks,
and hopefully one that will be around for many years to come.
