One of my favorite minor league parks - seats close to the action, cheap prices, and just a great atmosphere. Once home of the Pittsfield Mets (NY Penn League), the Pittsfield Cubs (Eastern League), the Berkshire Black Bears (Can-Am League) and the Pittsfield Colonials, Wahconah Park is one of the oldest parks in the country. There is a wooden grandstand behind home plate, and metal bleachers down both lines. The covered grandstand has a couple hundred box seats, but is made up mostly of wooden benches with backs that are sold as General Admission. If you do sit in the grandstand, stay alert because the seats are some of the closest in the minors. This park is probably best known for its "sun delays" because it faces the wrong direction. Having been to about 20 games here, I have yet to see one, though. The dimensions are a bit strange, as the deepest part of the park is in right-center. Center field is just 374 feet from home plate, but the fence then juts out in right center. It is about 330 feet down both lines. Box seats are a little expensive at $7.50, but the Grandstand and GA tickets are both under $5. Food prices which had been reasonable, rose with the arrival of the Black Bears. The concession and souvenir stands are located in the concourse areas behind the grandstand. Also, a great place for autograph seekers as the players are often wondering the concourse area before games. There has been talk of building a new park in Pittsfield, which would be a real shame since it is one of the gems in the Northeast. Efforts to renovate the park have repeatedly failed, which means that pro baseball will probably not be returning here anytime soon. Though in 2010, surprisingly pro baseball did return when the Nashua franchise from the Can-Am League moved here. After two years of struggling at the box office, the Colonials folded, once again leaving Wahconah Park without professional baseball. There will however be a collegiate league team playing here starting in 2012. For a panoramic of the exterior, click here.
