| Though the old name (Riverview Stadium) of this park may indicate that it is in view of the river, it is in fact not. The casino riverboats which sit on the river are within view, but no water is actually visible from the park as it sits a couple hundred yards from the Mississippi. Riverview is a classic WPA project stadium. It features a large covered grandstand that extends past both the first and third base bags, and covers every seat in the house. It consists of about 5 rows of box seats close to the field which are wooden and in pretty rough shape. The rest of the seating is benches, most with backs. An ordinary scoreboard sits behind the fence in left field. The concourse area is located behind the grandstand and consists of multiple concession stands and a small souvenir stand. Food choices included much of the standard ballpark fare including brats and grilled chicken sandwiches. Prices were pretty cheap on most everything, though service was somewhat slow. A few between inning contests were done, but were upstaged the night I was there by the Zooperstars. A useless mascot, Lowe, was also on hand to entertain the younger crowd. Riverview is a fine place to watch a game, but the fans do not seem to be coming out as the Lumber Kings don't average more than 1,000 per game most years. With such a classic stadium as this, it would be a real shame not to have baseball in some fashion here. |
